Orthodontics on the NHS

The NHS funds the cost for one course of orthodontic treatment for children under 18 who qualify. The only exception is the charge for replacement of removable braces lost or damaged beyond repair.  Eligibility depends on a health assessment by a dentist or orthodontist, using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) to gauge if teeth alignment affects health or function significantly, not just appearance.

For Children & Teens (Under 18):

See Your Dentist:

Your general dentist first assesses if braces are medically necessary.

Referral:

If needed, your general dentist will refer you to a specialist orthodontist & provide you with a unique reference number (URN) so you can track your referral online.

IOTN Assessment:

The orthodontist uses the IOTN system to check for severe issues like very crowded, protruding, or misplaced teeth that impact oral health.

Eligibility:

NHS treatment is usually for Grade 4 (extensive irregularities) and Grade 5 (severe irregularities) cases, with Grade 3 assessed individually, sometimes considering aesthetics.
