FAQ's

At Kings Orthodontics, we care about our patients' concerns and questions. That's why we have a dedicated FAQ section to answer the most common inquiries about orthodontics. Whether you're curious about the treatment process, have concerns about the cost, or have questions about cleaning your teeth with braces, we've got you covered. Read through our FAQ section and reach out to us if you have any other questions or concerns.

1 / HOW MUCH DOES TREATMENT COST?

At Kings Orthodontics, we understand that cost is a key consideration when choosing orthodontic treatment. The price depends on several factors, including the severity of your case, the type of braces you choose, and the length of treatment. At your consultation we'll carefully assess your individual needs and provide you with a personalised treatment plan including a transparent cost breakdown and payment options.

2 / HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO HAVE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?

Orthodontic treatment typically starts for children when most of their adult teeth have erupted, usually around ages 10-14 but can start sooner (age 7-8) for early intervention when advised by their dental professional.
Orthodontic treatment is available for adults of any age, provided your teeth and gums are healthy.

3 / HOW DO I BRUSH MY TEETH WITH BRACES?
  • Braces require extra care to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Follow these steps for effective cleaning:

  • Frequency & Duration: Brush at least twice daily (morning/night) and after meals, for at least two minutes each time.

  • Toothpaste: Use fluoride toothpaste with a pea-sized amount.

  • Brush Angle: Position the brush bristles at a 45-degree angle towards the gums to clean under the wire and around brackets.

  • Motion: Use small, gentle circular motions; let the brush do the work (no scrubbing).

  • Areas to Clean:

    • Above the brace: Brush down towards the wire.

    • On the brace: Clean the front surface and brackets.

    • Below the brace: Brush up towards the wire and gumline.

    • Gumline: Gently clean where teeth meet gums to prevent swelling.

    • Other Surfaces: Don't forget chewing surfaces and the backs of teeth.

Essential Tools & Habits:

  • Interdental Brushes: Use these daily to clean between brackets, under wires, and around the brace. Point them away from the gums to avoid injury.

  • Fluoride Mouthwash: Use an alcohol-free fluoride rinse once daily at a different time than brushing to add protection (avoid eating or rinsing for 20 minutes after using).

  • Time: Allow extra time for brushing with braces.

  • Look in the mirror to ensure all surfaces are clean

4 / HOW LONG DOES TREATMENT TAKE?

Every case is unique, so treatment times can vary based on your individual needs. Generally, most orthodontic treatment takes between 18-24 months, although some cases may be completed more quickly, while others may take longer depending on complexity.

5 / WILL I NEED TO HAVE TEETH TAKEN OUT?

Every course of orthodontic treatment needs to be tailored to the needs of the individual patient. In some cases, we will need to arrange the extraction of one or more teeth in order to achieve the best possible result.

  • 1) Treating dental overcrowding.  It is sometimes impossible to provide a successful result where there is dental overcrowding without extracting teeth to create space for the desired tooth movement.

  • 2) To avoid the risk of damage caused by moving teeth excessively outwards.  When straightening severely crowded teeth without extractions, there is a risk that the teeth could be pushed outside the bone, subsequently leading to gum recession.

6 / CAN I EAT NORMALLY WITH BRACES?

Every case is unique, so treatment times can vary based on your individual needs. Generally, most orthodontic treatment takes between 18-24 months, although some cases may be completed more quickly, while others may take longer depending on complexity.

7 / Will I need a mouthguard with braces?

If you play contact sports or activities where there’s a risk of impact, wearing a mouthguard with braces is strongly recommended. A specially designed orthodontic mouthguard helps protect your teeth, braces, and lips from injury while ensuring comfort and a proper fit.

Your orthodontic team can advise on the best type of mouthguard for you, ensuring it works safely alongside your braces and supports your treatment throughout your orthodontic journey.
